The Malaysian government will not force a merger between Proton and Perodua, Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said, making clear that any plans between the two national automakers will need the approval of their respective stakeholders. “We cannot force them to make a decision as there is a long spectrum”, Mustapa said to the media earlier today. “At one end is loose cooperation and, at the other, a merger, which has yet to be decided”. However, Mustapa, having discussed in details with Proton and Perodua about the possibility of a merger, believes that consolidation between the two local heavyweights will bring about synergy and a more competitive local car industry. Moreover, the government, which first mooted the idea for a more streamlined car industry in November 2010, is in favour of a merger between Proton and Perodua, and will continue to hold talks with both companies. Duh, It’s A Car Stereo!

Image
Pretty self-explanatory isn’t it? It’s a stereo system in a car, you say. Whoa, hold your horses, it’s not that simple. Although some people like to put home stereos in their cars and vans (out of dire need for some sounds), sometimes it just doesn’t work. Yeah, maybe before it could’ve worked just fine, all you needed was radio and a cassette player (or 8 tracks, for the inner dinosaur in you) so sure, lug those big box speakers into the back seat and you’ll be blaring down the highway. But nowadays there are things like cd players and mp3 players and your popup LCD panels and all that techie knickknack you’d think they’d like to build a home theater system right smack on the console of your van. If you don’t know anything about these things but would like to have some sounds in your car anyway, here are some things to know about a car stereo. As mentioned above, at first units and speakers from home audio systems and professional markets were just simply installed into vehicles. H...

Buying new vs. used cars

by: Mantius Cazaubon New vs used. Which car is right for you? Consider the following. Owning a brand new car is exciting. But financially speaking, it makes more sense to buy a used car. As soon as you drive a new car off the lot, it loses a great portion of its value. This is because your car is no longer “new”. New cars lose about 40% of their value within 3 years, then depreciation starts to slow down. Why not buy a used car and allow someone else to take that depreciation hit? The previous owner will have absorbed the steepest part of the depreciation cycle. At that point the costs of owning and operating the car will be reduced. The money you save on depreciation will surely go a long way. Another benefit of buying used is lower cost. By buying used you pay less. You will also save on financing costs, insurance premiums, registration and licensing fees. You don’t have to worry about paying sales tax. As with everything else there are a few downsides to buying a...
